Purple Loosestrife

BACKGROUND

As noted earlier in this web site, the LMCD has concern with the introduction of all exotic species into Lake Minnetonka. Another exotic species that has been introduced into Lake Minnetonka is purple loosestrife.

Purple loosestrife has been present on the shores of Lake Minnetonka and in the nearby wetlands for over 50 years. In many areas, it has created dense populations that have replaced cattails and other native plant species. Initially used a garden plant, this species is now on the state noxious weed list because it is invasive and harmful to wildlife habitat.

MANAGEMENT

Little management has been done in the Lake Minnetonka area because the use of herbicides on large populations does not provide long-term results. Biological control, using four different inspect species, is now showing promise for control in large established loosestrife populations.
